Terms of Reference
Charge: Provide scientific leadership for the Community Earth System Model (CESM) project, including oversight of activities of working groups; coordination of model experiments; making decisions on model definition and development; helping with writing proposals for computer time at the NCAR – Wyoming Supercomputer Center and elsewhere, if appropriate; encouragement of external participation in the project; and promotion of CESM within NSF and other agencies, as appropriate. Also, to provide information to the CESM Advisory Board (CAB), as requested, on the functioning and progress of CESM.
Membership: The CESM Scientific Steering Committee (SSC) will consist of a mix of 12-15 scientists from outside of NCAR and from within, including the Director of NCAR's Climate and Global Dynamics (CGD) Division. In no case shall there be less than half of the members from outside NCAR. The Chair of the SSC, who also serves as the CESM Chief Scientist, will be appointed by the Director of NCAR, after consultation with the Director of the NSF Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences (AGS) Climate and Large-Scale Dynamics Program, and others as appropriate. The term of the chair is three years, with the possibility of a one-year extension. The SSC members will represent broad scientific disciplines related to Earth system modeling and science, and will serve 2-year terms with possibility of renewal for additional terms up to a maximum of 6 years. Rotation of SSC membership is expected.
Appointment of Members: The members of the CESM SSC will be appointed by the Director of NCAR, after consultation with the Director of the NSF-AGS Climate and Large-Scale Dynamics Program, and others as appropriate.
Meeting Frequency: The CESM SSC will typically meet at least two times a year, or more often as needed.
