CESM2 RFMIP Simulations

These experiments follow a similar protocol to the CMIP6 experiment piClim-histall that was part of CMIP6.  They are run with a prescribed monthly climatology of sea surface temperatures taken from the average of years 401 to 2000 of the CESM2 pre-industrial control.  External forcings are time varying and follow the protocols of the CMIP6 historical simulations with the exception of the prescription of biomass burning emissions during the late 20th and early 21st centuries which have been smoothed in the same way as the "smbb" members of the CESM2 large ensemble (i.e., the second 50 members).  See the "Modifications incorporated in the second half of the LENS2 simulations" section here.   The ensemble consists of three members that extend from 1850 to 2014 and the atmosphere and land for members 1 to 3 were initialized from years 1231, 1251, and 1281 of the CESM2 pre-industrial control, respectively.  This simulation can be used to diagnose the effective radiative forcing for the second 50 members of the CESM2 large ensemble and to look at the direct impact of radiative forcings, absent SST changes, more generally.
