Report of the CSM Paleoclimate Working Group Meeting

Fourth Annual Climate System Model Workshop

by Bette L. Otto-Bliesner, Co-Chair

Breckenridge, Colorado

June 24, 1999

The CSM Paleoclimate Working Group met on the morning of June 24, 1999, at the Fourth Annual Climate System Model Workshop in Breckenridge, Colorado. Presentations by NCAR and university researchers covered simulations of past climate with CCM3, NCOM, and the fully-coupled version of the CSM. Following on the recommendations of previous working group meetings, tools to allow easy input-output and running of the Paleo-CSM have been developed. A tutorial is available on the CSM Paleoclimate Working Group web page. Participants at this working group meeting recommended CSM 1.2 be ported to the SGI Origin and IBM SP2.

Presentations given at the meeting:

1. Introduction and Welcome (Bette Otto-Bliesner, NCAR)

2. CSENT*: Volcanic and Solar Forcing Experiments (Caspar Ammann, NCAR and Univeristy of Massachusetts)

3. Cretaceous Spinups (Esther Brady, NCAR)

4. Mid-Holocene Wetlands: CCM3 Sensitivity (Bob Gallimore, University of Wisconsin)

5. CCM3 and the Southwest Monsoon (Peter Fawcett, University of New Mexico)

6. Early Eocene Sensitivity Studies with CCM3.6 (Jake Sewall, University of California at Santa Cruz)

7. CCM3 and Greenhouse Climates of the Early Eocene (Matt Huber, Univeristy of California at Santa Cruz)

8. PaleoCSM Web-based Tutorial (Christine Shields, NCAR)

CSENT*: Climate of the 17th-18th-19th-20th Centuries
